I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back on the past academic year, I perceive a path of personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a prominent concern for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized the importance of being authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter like-minded people.

Another hurdle was balancing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be a blow to your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me conquer this feeling, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost ensure that others are facing the same dilemma. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have excessive support!

All in all, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the array of support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has illustrated to me that I am never alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment despite stressors like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead.
