I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the last academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently among the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be one of your top concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and interact with others. However, today I can proudly say I have forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that making an effort to connect at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that authenticity is crucial. With a plethora of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter peers who share your interests.

Another obstacle was navigating the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in various ways, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What sustained me during this period was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral care until late in the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly worthwhile. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the support offered. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are usually unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead.
