I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights did this year provide, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more challenging facets of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what insights did I gain? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another challenge revolved around the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something isn’t clear, I can nearly guarantee there are others who are also struggling. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the single most essential lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is enormously beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead.
