I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

Among the first and most formidable challenges I encountered was establishing friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, now I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I glean from this experience? I learned that taking a bold step at the start of the year is always the best approach. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breakers and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, let it be your authentic self. With a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle I confronted was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for one’s confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you find something unclear, I can nearly assure you that there are others who feel the same way. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are myriad ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this segment of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much of it!

Overall, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the plethora of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead.
