Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was about to commence my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?<\/p>\n

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you\u2019re an incoming student, it may be one of your major concerns. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and greet others. Yet, sitting here now, I can proudly say I\u2019ve made some of the finest friends I\u2019ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I\u2019ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a step forward at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don\u2019t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals within the course and university, you\u2019re sure to find people who resonate with you.<\/p>\n

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes undermine your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are plenty of others who are just as confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the staff!<\/p>\n

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn\u2019t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks \u2013 I did take one at the year\u2019s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it\u2019s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have an excess of it!<\/p>\n

Generally, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated with the numerous support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I\u2019m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to have fun amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.<\/p>\n
