I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown wasn’t something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! So what has this year revealed to me, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most overwhelming obstacles was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your chief worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, far too intimidated to step out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can state with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in small talk with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve learned that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, that’s alright! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events available to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you can be, let it be yourself. There are countless diverse individuals across the program and university; you’re bound to find like-minded people.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant transition from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me during that time, one being the reminder that everyone shares this experience. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly guarantee that there are at least a few others who are in the same position. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Request help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support that’s available to you. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased with the numerous support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy myself even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, frightened, and uncertain about the future.
