Back in October 2022, just ten months ago, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about what the future held as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was a departure from my previously reserved nature. In reflecting on the last academic year, I regard it as a time filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?<\/p>\n

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This often looms large for newcomers to university life. On my first day in my residence, I remained in my room for the entirety of the day, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Now, I can assertively state that I\u2019ve formed some wonderful friendships here at the university and within my program. I\u2019ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. I realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the academic year is advantageous. If you feel unprepared, don\u2019t fret\u2014there are plenty of ice-breaking activities to help you connect with others. Just be yourself, and you will find individuals like you.<\/p>\n

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a notable leap from A-levels, and an even steeper rise from the first to the second term. Such a transition can weigh on your self-esteem, particularly when you observe others studying and feel inadequate. Keep in mind, everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, it is likely to be unclear to others as well. Therefore, don\u2019t hesitate to seek assistance. This is essential during your first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!<\/p>\n

The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges that students encounter. They maintain communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. Although I didn\u2019t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, I wish I had accessed it earlier. I took a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to connect with the staff\u2014a truly invaluable experience. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and it\u2019s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. Make the most of the support available; you can never have too much assistance!<\/p>\n

This year has taught me that the anxieties surrounding university are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support of both staff and fellow students. I\u2019ve discovered that I am never isolated and learned how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.<\/p>\n
