I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unknown was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year brought, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most frightening hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be a considerable worry. On my first day of moving into my housing, several days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and meet others. However, reflecting today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this institution and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be one thing, be genuine. With so many varied individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the workload and complexity of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being placed into such an environment can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same predicament. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who also don’t. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most vital lesson to learn in the first year. Seek help from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They show compassion towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is exceptionally beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to exploit the help available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the myriad support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even with pressures like exams and due dates.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Twelve months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future.
