I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a new student. Plunging into the deep end was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize an academic year rich in personal growth, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more overwhelming elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my first day of moving into my dorm, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of that day confined to my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with fellow students in the same boat. So, what have I gleaned from this? I realized that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you can be, it should be yourself. There’s an array of individuals throughout the program and university; you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I needed to tackle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always conducive to confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in managing that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re struggling with concepts, I can almost assure you that there are several others in the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This could be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for support from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They express empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking bold steps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to exploit the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In broad terms, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both in the lead-up to and during university, are nearly always irrational and can be mitigated by the numerous support systems provided by staff and other students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to relish experiences alongside the pressures that come with exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead.
