I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often considered one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be your primary concern. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Reflecting on today, I can say with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with light conversation with others in the same boat. What did I take away from this? I realized that making the initial leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities to help you connect with others. I also understood that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of people within the course and university, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your mindset.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to achieve success and understand the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned making bold moves earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the available support from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amid challenges like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future.
