In October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. New experiences were not something I was used to, but now I reflect on a year rich with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and what is my current position?<\/p>\n

A significant challenge at the start was forging friendships, an intimidating part of entering university life. On my first day in my accommodation, I stayed in my room, too shy to approach others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at Imperial. I discovered that taking the initiative early on is advantageous. Even if you’re feeling unprepared, there are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to facilitate connections. Be authentic, and you’ll meet individuals who resonate with you.<\/p>\n

Another hurdle was the increased workload and complexity of the material compared to A-levels. It’s common to experience self-doubt when observing others studying diligently, but it’s important to remember that everyone shares the same experience. If something confuses you, others probably feel the same way. Seek assistance from classmates and staff; it’s vital during the first year.<\/p>\n

The faculty in Materials is nurturing and understanding. They engage with students regarding various issues. I took on the role of a year well-being representative, which enhanced my connection with the faculty. Utilize the available support; it can never be excessive.<\/p>\n

This year revealed to me that apprehensions regarding university are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the help of both staff and fellow students. I have learned that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.<\/p>\n
