Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. In retrospect, I recognize a year packed with personal development, hurdles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?<\/p>\n

One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of starting university, and if you\u2019re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, far too apprehensive to venture out and interact with others. Presently, I can affirm that I\u2019ve established some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I\u2019ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you\u2019re not prepared, don\u2019t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. Also, stay authentic. With such a varied community at the university, you\u2019re sure to encounter individuals like yourself.<\/p>\n

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and even more drastic from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you might feel inadequate when comparing yourself to peers. Keep in mind, everyone is navigating the same waters. If something isn\u2019t clear to you, it\u2019s likely that others feel the same way. Therefore, don\u2019t hesitate to seek assistance. This is arguably the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!<\/p>\n

The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They maintain communication with us throughout the year regarding our queries. I didn\u2019t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a bold step at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role helped me build connections with staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with faculty, and it\u2019s one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My key takeaway is to seize the support offered. You can never have too much assistance!<\/p>\n

This year has significantly illustrated to me that feelings of anxiety about university are often unfounded and can be mitigated by the support available from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I\u2019m never on my own and shown me how to appreciate myself even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.<\/p>\n
