I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unfamiliar wasn’t exactly what my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year provided, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is definitely one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be among your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day confined to my room because I was too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here today, however, I can proudly assert that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university in this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all started with initiating casual conversations with people in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this experience? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. There are so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university; you’re sure to find those like you.

Another challenge I had to face was managing the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even bigger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are at least several others who don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek assistance from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They are sympathetic towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until near the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred earlier to taking chances – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be mitigated through the multitude of support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never on my own, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself amidst the stressors like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was apprehensive, fearful, and in doubt about what lay ahead.
