I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown was far from what my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of pleasure! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was building friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more nerve-wracking aspects of entering university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day remaining in my room because I was too daunted to step out and meet others. Sitting here today, though, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with simple conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel fully ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, it’s to be you. With so many diverse individuals across the program and institution, you’re sure to find like-minded people.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a jump from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few aspects aided me through that sentiment, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If something doesn’t click, I can almost guarantee there are others who are equally puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter hardships. They show empathy towards students and keep in consistent contact with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned taking leaps before – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much help!

Overall, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unwarranted and can be diminished with the various support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has shown me how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, afraid, and unsure about what lay ahead.
