I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most challenging hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be your main worry. On my initial day of moving into housing, a few days prior to the term, I spent the entire day in my room, too shy to go out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve made some of the best friends during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I discover? Taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is crucial. With a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.

Another challenge I faced was the heavy workload and the complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a competitive setting can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What helped me was remembering that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, there’s a good chance others feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most essential skill to cultivate in the first year. Seek guidance from your peers and instructors!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show compassion towards students and maintain steady communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year health representative. This role allowed me to establish relationships with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the assistance available. It’s impossible to have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by utilizing the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly on my own and how to have fun even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Uncategorised

Tagged Courses, featured, first year, imperial college london

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng) Approximately ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future.
