**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, uncertainty, and skepticism about what the future held. As someone who had always been quite introverted and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time enriched with personal development, challenges, and a plethora of unforgettable experiences. So what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Fear of Friendships

One of the foremost hurdles I encountered at the beginning was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my very first day in my student accommodation, the thought of introducing myself was so intimidating that I ended up spending the whole day in my room. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.

What made the difference? Taking that first step. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new people abound. The most crucial insight I gained was to embrace my true self. With a diverse student community, you will inevitably find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university-level coursework presented another significant challenge. The intensity and complexity of the material escalated considerably, particularly between the first and second terms. At times, it was all too easy to feel daunted and question my capabilities, especially when I compared myself to my peers.

What helped me push through? Reminding myself that my classmates were navigating similar struggles. If I found a topic perplexing, chances were high that others were having difficulties as well. The most valuable lesson I gathered was to seek assistance—whether it be from fellow students or academic personnel. Requesting help is not a sign of weakness; rather, it is a vital component of the learning journey.

### The Value of Guidance from Faculty

One of the most enriching elements of my course has been the exceptional support from the teaching staff. They sincerely wish for their students to thrive and are always receptive to discussions about any challenges we encounter. Although I didn’t fully embrace pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier.

Early on, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with lecturers and tutors, and establishing those connections can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much help!

### Concluding Thoughts

In hindsight, this year has shown me that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to commencing university were unfounded. There exist myriad support systems, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist with any obstacles encountered. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I am never truly alone and that it is indeed feasible to harmonize academic responsibilities with an enjoyable university life.
