**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was awash in anxiety, uncertainty, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being a naturally shy and reserved individual, embarking on this new journey felt quite daunting. However, looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I currently find myself?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was the challenge of making friends. If you find yourself in this position as a prospective student, you might share this concern. On my initial day in student housing, the thought of meeting new people was so overwhelming that I spent the entire day sequestered in my room. Yet, as time passed, I began to develop solid friendships with classmates and others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—friends who have become like a second family to me.

What lesson did I glean from this? Taking that first step is invariably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you are sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to the Academic Challenges

Another significant hurdle was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of university-level coursework. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term proved even more daunting. It’s easy to succumb to feelings of being overwhelmed or to doubt your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying with great intensity.

What aided me during this period was recognizing that I wasn’t alone—many of my classmates were grappling with similar issues. If you find yourself confused about a topic, it’s likely that others are as well, so don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This was one of the most crucial lessons I acquired in my first year: actively seek support from your peers and your professors.

### The Importance of Staff Support

Speaking of professors, the faculty in the Materials Science and Engineering department are truly remarkable. They genuinely wish for their students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained ongoing communication, addressing our concerns and providing valuable guidance.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on the past year, I’ve realized that many of the fears and anxieties I harbored before starting university were often unfounded. With the right support from both staff and fellow students, navigating university life becomes considerably easier. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and that it is feasible to strike a balance between academic pressures and enjoyment.

If you’re on the cusp of starting university, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, welcome new experiences, and don’t hesitate to seek help when needed. You will grow in ways you never anticipated, and before long, you’ll be reminiscing about an extraordinary first year.
