**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was inundated with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the brink of my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has traditionally been quiet and reserved, embarking on this new venture felt daunting. Now, in retrospect, I recognize a year characterized by personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant hurdle I encountered was the challenge of forging new friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall my first day in the student residence—I remained in my room the entire day, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, as I sit here today, I can assert that I’ve made some of the finest friends of my life. Imperial has evolved into a second family for me, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others in similar situations.
What did I glean? Taking that initial step is invariably worthwhile. If you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to connect with individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the workload and complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s all too easy to question yourself when observing peers studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me through this was understanding that everyone is undergoing a similar experience. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to seek help is among the most crucial skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the aspects I came to value the most was the exceptional support from the Materials department staff. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and recognize the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Assuming the role of a well-being representative connected me with staff members, which turned out to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the support on offer—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
In hindsight, this year has taught me that the apprehension I felt prior to and during university was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive support provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I discovered how to balance academic pressures with enjoyment, maximizing my time at Imperial.
If you’re on the verge of starting your university adventure, understand that challenges will arise, but so will opportunities for growth, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments. Take the plunge—you won’t regret it!
