**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a mix of nerves, uncertainty, and excitement as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown felt intimidating, especially for someone who has always been on the more reserved side. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the foremost obstacles I encountered initially was making new friends. If you’re a future student, this could be among your primary concerns as well. I vividly remember moving into my accommodation a few days ahead of the term and spending an entire day holed up in my room, too apprehensive to reach out to others. Yet today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Imperial has become my second family, and all it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were equally nervous.

The crucial takeaway? Take that step early. If you don’t feel prepared, fret not—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet new individuals. Most importantly, embrace your true self. With such a varied student population, you’re likely to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel daunted or doubt your capabilities when observing others study with confidence. However, one reassuring thought for me was that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find something tough to grasp, it’s likely that others are, too.

The best piece of advice I can offer? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether it’s from fellow students or lecturers, asking for assistance is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Support from Staff

One of the most comforting elements of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about students’ success and are always ready to assist. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and maintain open channels of communication throughout the year.

While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I do wish I had engaged with it sooner. Early on, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge strong connections with staff members. Building relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be remarkably advantageous, and I strongly encourage upcoming students to interact with them whenever they can.

### Concluding Reflections

In retrospect, this year has illuminated the fact that many of the apprehensions I held before beginning university were unfounded. A wealth of support is available, both from staff and fellow students, to assist in navigating the challenges of university life. Most significantly, I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone and that it’s entirely possible to manage academic pressures while also enjoying a rich and fulfilling student experience.

If you are on the brink of starting your journey at Imperial, embrace the challenges, seek support when necessary, and above all—savor the experience!
