### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and ambiguity regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a newcomer. Departing from my comfort zone was not something my introverted and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the quest for friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be among your top worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days ahead of the semester kick-off, I spent the whole day isolated in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, which all commenced with simple dialogues with individuals facing similar situations.

So, what have I gleaned? Taking that initial step is unquestionably worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

#### Adapting to Academic Demand

Another significant challenge was getting used to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more daunting.

It’s simple to become overwhelmed and question your competence, particularly when witnessing others study diligently. However, one of the most crucial lessons I garnered was that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or your instructors.

#### The Significance of Support Networks

This leads me to another important takeaway: the remarkable support offered by the teaching staff in the Materials department. They sincerely wish for student success and remain receptive to feedback and issues. Throughout the year, they kept constant communication with us, ensuring we had necessary backing.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I regret not doing it sooner. One of the smartest choices I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This role provided me with the opportunity to connect with staff, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can immensely enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Utilize all available resources—you can never overindulge in support!

#### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has enlightened me that the apprehensiveness I felt before and during university was often unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in navigating the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated.

Managing academics alongside social life and personal well-being can be challenging, but it is entirely feasible. University is not solely about academics—it’s about personal growth, relationships, and optimizing every opportunity.

If you are on the verge of embarking on your journey at Imperial, embrace each moment, take that leap, and remember that assistance is always accessible when needed.
