**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and excitement as I geared up to begin my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial. As an inherently shy and reserved individual, embarking on this new phase felt daunting. Now, in hindsight, I recognize a year marked by personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be your primary concern. I recall my first day in student housing, where I found myself retreating to my room, too daunted to step outside and introduce myself. However, as the year unfolded, I built some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
The essential lesson? Take the plunge early. Even if it feels premature, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial is brimming with diverse personalities, and you’ll naturally encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Expectations
The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was another considerable challenge. The workload and complexity escalated, particularly transitioning from the first to the second term. At times, I found it easy to feel swamped or question my capabilities, especially when observing others engrossed in their studies.
What aided me during this period? Acknowledging that everyone faced similar struggles. If you’re puzzled by something, chances are others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from peers, tutors, or instructors. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a vital component of the learning journey.
### The Value of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most rewarding elements of my first year was the tremendous support I received from the Materials Science department. The staff are genuinely invested in the well-being and academic success of students. They recognize the challenges we encounter and foster open communication throughout the year.
Though I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Becoming a well-being representative allowed me to build connections with staff, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. My recommendation? Utilize the resources at your disposal—whether it’s academic advice, well-being services, or merely getting to know your lecturers.
### Insights from My First Year
Looking back on my first year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced prior to starting university was entirely natural but often unfounded. There is a wealth of assistance available, both from staff and fellow students, to help navigate obstacles. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never on this journey alone, and it’s feasible to balance academic challenges with a rewarding university experience.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, seize the opportunities, seek help when necessary, and remember—you’ve got this!
