### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was preparing to commence my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at the university. Being someone who had always been somewhat shy and reserved, entering this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I realize it has been a year filled with personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

#### Conquering the Fear of Friendship

One of the primary challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your significant concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, right before the term kicked off, I felt so apprehensive that I spent the entire day alone in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.

Jumping ahead to today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who were in the same situation.

So, what have I taken away from this? First, making that first move is always beneficial. If you’re not quite ready at the onset, don’t fret—there will be plenty of ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Second, simply being yourself is paramount. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.

#### Adapting to Academic Demands

Adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material was another significant obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. At times, I felt inundated and questioned my abilities, particularly when observing others studying with confidence.

What assisted me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone was navigating similar challenges. If I struggled with atopic, it was likely that others were as well. The critical takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from fellow students or instructors, looking for help is one of the most essential abilities to cultivate in your first year.

#### The Value of Staff Support

Speaking of support, one of the finest aspects of studying Materials Science at Imperial is the impressive faculty. The staff genuinely want to see students thrive, and they comprehend the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open communication with us throughout the academic year and offer diverse forms of academic and pastoral care.

I didn’t fully exploit this support until later in the year, and I wish I had done so sooner. One of the best decisions I made was assuming the role of a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the assistance that’s at your disposal—you can never have too much support!

#### Final Thoughts

Looking back, this year has highlighted that the anxieties and concerns I harbored before starting university were largely unfounded. There is extensive support available, from both faculty and fellow students, to guide you through the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve discovered ways to balance academic demands with enjoying the university experience.

If you’re about to embark on your own journey, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and embrace the adventure. You’ll develop more than you ever anticipated.
