### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and trepidation regarding what was ahead. I was on the brink of starting my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been reticent and introverted, stepping into this fresh chapter felt daunting. Now, in retrospect, I can see a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and remarkable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my position now?

#### Facing the Challenge of Forming Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the outset was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, you may share the same feelings of apprehension. I certainly did—so much so that on my initial day in student housing, I remained in my room the entire time, too afraid to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was venturing beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with people experiencing the same situation.

The essential takeaway? Take that step at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most significantly, be true to yourself—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find friends with similar interests.

#### Adjusting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was acclimatizing to the volume of work and the heightened difficulty of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term proved even more challenging. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I observed others studying diligently.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone faces difficulties at some point. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others are having the same experience. The best action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Learning to request support is one of the most important skills you can cultivate in your first year.

#### The Value of Staff Support

Speaking of support, the Materials Science department at Imperial has been exceptional. The staff genuinely care about students’ success and are always willing to address our issues. They recognize the challenges we encounter and keep in open dialogue with us throughout the year.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. One of the most rewarding choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to engage with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are countless avenues to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key insight? Make use of the support available—there’s no such thing as too much help.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was frequently unwarranted. Numerous support systems exist, from staff to fellow students, ready to facilitate the transition. Most importantly, I’ve come to realize that I am never alone. Amid the stress of exams and deadlines, I’ve discovered ways to relish my time at university, and I wouldn’t exchange this experience for anything.

If you’re about to commence your journey at Imperial, understand that challenges will arise, but so too will extraordinary opportunities for personal growth, friendship, and achievement. Take that plunge—you won’t regret it.
