**Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in apprehension, uncertainty, and hesitation about what awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and private, embarking on this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and many unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered early on was the pursuit of friendship. If you’re a potential student, this could be one of your biggest worries as well. On my first day in student accommodation, I was so daunted by the notion of socializing that I spent the whole day in my room, steering clear of social interactions. However, fast forward to now, and I can assuredly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
What was the essential lesson I learned? Take the plunge. Even if you don’t feel entirely prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker sessions and chances to connect with individuals in similar circumstances. Most crucially, be authentic—Imperial boasts a vibrant community, and you’re sure to discover people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Challenges
Another significant hurdle was getting accustomed to the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become disheartened when observing others studying and start to question your own competence.
What assisted me in pushing through was the realization that everyone shares this experience. If you’re finding it difficult to grasp a concept, chances are others are grappling with it as well. The most beneficial action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Learning to ask for support is among the most valuable abilities you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Support from Faculty
One of the greatest revelations of my first year was the extent of support provided by the Materials Science department staff. They genuinely strive for student success and are always receptive to feedback and concerns. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later, I wish I had engaged with it sooner.
Early in the year, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly rewarding. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway? Make the most of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance.
### Closing Reflections
As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the fears I harbored—both prior to and during my university journey—were unfounded. There are endless support mechanisms available, from staff to fellow students, to help you navigate the challenges. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and that it’s feasible to balance the pressures of academia with a fulfilling university experience.
If you’re about to embark on your path at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: embrace the opportunities, seek assistance when necessary, and don’t hesitate to step out of your comfort zone. You’ll be amazed at how much you evolve along the way.
