**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been shy and introverted, stepping into this new phase felt quite daunting. Looking back now, I perceive a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous pleasant memories. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects of commencing university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, I remained in my room for hours, too apprehensive to venture outside and introduce myself. However, as I reflect on my experience, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial has turned into a second home, and all it required was a few straightforward conversations with individuals who shared my sentiments.
So, what did I learn? Taking that first step is always a rewarding endeavor. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. Above all, be authentic—Imperial is teeming with diverse personalities, and you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic expectations and rigors. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the leap between the first and second terms proved even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated when surrounded by diligent students, but I discovered that everyone faces difficulties at some stage. If you’re grappling with a subject, it’s likely that others are as well.
The best piece of advice I can offer? Seek assistance. This becomes one of the most important skills you can nurture during your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to fellow students or asking professors for guidance, never hesitate to pose questions.
### The Value of Faculty Support
One of the standout aspects of this year was the exceptional support provided by the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely desire for students to thrive and are always receptive to feedback. They comprehend the hurdles we encounter and take a proactive approach to offer assistance.
Although I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to develop connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and engaging with them can significantly enhance your university journey. My most important insight? Utilize the support available—you can never receive too much help!
### Concluding Reflections
In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the anxieties I harbored prior to entering university were unfounded. There are multiple support structures in place, including staff and peers, to assist you through any challenges. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I am never alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university experience is attainable.
If you are about to embark on your journey at Imperial, seize the opportunities that lie ahead. Take that initial step, seek help as needed, and above all, relish the experience!
