**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, doubts, and uncertainty as I geared up for my first year pursuing [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and quiet, stepping into this new phase of my life felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time marked by personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the outset was the task of forming friendships. If you are a prospective student, this concern may resonate with you as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so overwhelmed that I ended up isolating myself in my room, too apprehensive to engage with anyone. However, fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
What is the crucial takeaway? Take that first step. Even when feeling reluctant, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet people. Above all, be authentic—Imperial hosts a vibrant spectrum of students, and you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
### Navigating Academic Challenges
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the demanding coursework and the increased complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more challenging. Occasionally, observing others study made me doubt my capabilities.
What propelled me forward was coming to the realization that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I found a topic difficult to grasp, it was likely that others were too. My best piece of advice? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether reaching out to classmates or instructors, asking for help is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
One of the most comforting elements of my journey has been the outstanding assistance from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely aims for student success and remains open to students’ input. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later on, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner.
At the beginning of the year, I made a bold choice by becoming a well-being representative for my program. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff, which turned out to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much help.
### Concluding Thoughts
In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the fears I harbored prior to starting university were unfounded. There is a wealth of support accessible, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone and that balancing academic demands with a fulfilling university life is indeed achievable.
Therefore, to anyone embarking on their own university adventure—embrace the hurdles, take that leap, and seize every opportunity. You will not regret it.
