**A Year in Review: My Initial Journey in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I encountered a whirlwind of anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had typically been shy and introverted, stepping into this fresh phase felt daunting. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the significant obstacles I confronted early on was establishing friendships. If you’re a future student, this could also be a primary worry for you. On my inaugural day at the student housing, I sequestered myself in my room for the entirety of the day, feeling too daunted to venture out and make introductions. However, fast-forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. Imperial has turned into my second home, and it all started with a few brief chats with individuals who shared similar feelings.

So, what wisdom did I glean? Taking that initial step is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not quite ready right away, there’s no need for concern—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others await you. Most crucially, just be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re likely to discover friends who resonate with your passions and principles.

### Navigating Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demanding workload and the heightened complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It was all too easy to become overwhelmed, particularly when comparing myself to peers who seemed to grasp concepts more effortlessly.

What aided me during this time? The reminder that I wasn’t on this journey by myself. If I found a topic challenging, it was probable that many others did too. The most valuable lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Requesting help is not an indication of inadequacy but an essential skill for achieving success.

### The Significance of Staff Support

One of the most beneficial elements of my first year was the exceptional backing from the teaching staff. The professors in the Materials department genuinely have a vested interest in students’ success and remain receptive to feedback. They recognize the hurdles we encounter and make active efforts to assist us.

Although I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later in the academic year, I regret not doing so earlier. In the beginning, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with staff members. This proved to be immensely advantageous. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My ultimate takeaway? Utilize the resources at your disposal—you can never have an excess of support.

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that a lot of the anxieties I harbored before starting university were unfounded. There is a wealth of support accessible, both from faculty and fellow students. I’ve come to realize that I’m never genuinely alone and have discovered how to harmonize academic challenges with enjoyment.

For anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, my guidance is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and relish the journey. You’ll grow more than you ever imagined.
