**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introspective, this transition felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a period rich in personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
A significant challenge I encountered early on was building friendships. If you are a future student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in the student residence, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too afraid to step outside and meet people. However, sitting here now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life.
Imperial has become a second home for me, and all it took were a few straightforward conversations with individuals in similar situations. The most important lesson I learned? Take that first step. Even if you’re not feeling prepared, there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself—Imperial hosts a diverse community, and you’re sure to find others who share your passions.
### Adapting to Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adjusting to the workload and the higher complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels was evident, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more significant. It’s easy to feel daunted watching others study while questioning your own abilities.
What helped me through this phase was the understanding that everyone faces difficulties. If you’re struggling with a topic, there’s a good chance that your peers are as well. The best course of action is to reach out for help—whether from fellow students or instructors. Learning to ask for assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can hone in your first year.
### The Significance of Seeking Help
On the subject of support, the personnel in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They truly want students to thrive and are aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing assistance.
I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with staff, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. There are numerous opportunities to foster connections with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My biggest takeaway? Utilize the resources and support available—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
As I look back, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university was largely unwarranted. There are extensive support systems available, from staff to fellow students, ensuring that no one has to navigate this journey alone. Most importantly, I’ve learned how to manage academic challenges while fully enjoying my university experience.
For anyone preparing to embark on their own journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, seek help whenever necessary, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. You’ll develop in ways you never anticipated, and you might just discover a second family along this path.
