**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted, stepping into a completely unfamiliar setting was intimidating. Looking back now, I can see a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment. But what have I discovered, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant challenges I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this may be a concern for you as well. I recall spending my first day in student housing sequestered in my room, feeling too daunted to venture outside and introduce myself. However, fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life.
What was the key takeaway for me? Take that risk. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student population, you’re bound to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the demands of university-level coursework and its heightened complexity. The transition from A-levels was palpable, and moving from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when observing others studying rigorously.
What helped me navigate this? Reminding myself that I wasn’t in this alone. If I found something hard to grasp, it’s likely others were too. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Asking for support is not an indication of weakness; rather, it’s a crucial aspect of the learning process.
### The Significance of Engaging with Faculty
One of the most precious aspects of my first year was the backing from the Materials Science department. The faculty truly desires for students to thrive and are always receptive to input. Although I didn’t fully leverage pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier.
At the outset, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to develop connections with staff members, which proved incredibly advantageous. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My most significant insight? Utilize the support offered—you can never have excess assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
Reflecting on my year, I’ve come to realize that many of my initial apprehensions regarding university were baseless. Help is consistently accessible, whether from faculty or fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to juggle academic pressures while having an enjoyable university experience.
For anyone about to embark on their journey at Imperial, my recommendation is straightforward: seize the opportunities, seek assistance when necessary, and above all, be true to yourself.
