Upon relocating to London as an international student, one quickly realizes how costs can add up, from rent and groceries to transportation and tuition. Moreover, the professional environment presents a notably different atmosphere, showcasing new approaches to work, communication, and creative perception compared to one’s home country.
For me, part-time employment provided a link between these worlds, aiding in financial management while offering insights into the UK marketplace, particularly from a marketing and customer experience standpoint. My initial and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. Being compensated to generate content for a prestigious university was surreal and positively influenced my academic year.
Becoming a MORA Content Creator
Collaborating with the MORA team to craft content for over 700,000 individuals through Imperial’s social media platforms was a dream come true. It involved narrating stories and sharing student experiences, grasping institutional communication, and comprehending the tone and authenticity that connect with diverse audiences.
This position provided unexpected opportunities, such as interviewing notable figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. Such experiences would not have materialized without embracing that initial opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, uplifting, and encourages creative experimentation. Maintaining a balance between work and academics necessitates planning. I arranged my shifts during weeks with fewer classes. Your degree should remain the top priority, but a thoughtfully selected part-time job can enrich your educational experience. My marketing studies became more relevant when applied to actual jobs.
Exploring different part-time jobs
During my Master’s program, I engaged in various positions such as waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each role imparted unique lessons. My experience in hospitality provided essential customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. These skills have proven invaluable beyond the café environment.
