When I first arrived in London as an international student, I quickly noticed how fast expenses pile up, from rent and food to transport and tuition fees. The second observation was the unique professional atmosphere, where work, interaction, and creativity are viewed differently compared to my home country.
Part-time jobs became a link between these two realms for me. They assisted in managing my finances and gave me a glimpse into the UK market, especially regarding marketing and customer experience. My first and dearest position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s main marketing team. The experience of being compensated to produce content for a prestigious university felt surreal and had a greatly positive effect on my entire year.
Becoming a MORA Content Creator
Contributing to the team and generating content for over 700,000 followers across Imperial’s social media platforms made collaborating with the MORA team a dream come true. It encompassed more than just filming or writing; it was about storytelling, representing the student experience, mastering institutional communication, and recognizing the tone and authenticity that resonates with varied audiences.
This position unlocked extraordinary opportunities, including interviewing prominent figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of these experiences would have materialized without embracing that initial offer. The MORA team is friendly, supportive, and provides a creative environment for exploration. There are plenty of avenues to discover part-time employment while attending Imperial. Keep in mind that most part-time employers value reliability, initiative, and friendliness, not merely experience.
Balancing work and study
Managing work alongside classes takes organization. I planned my shifts for when my class load was lighter. Your degree should be the main focus, but a strategically chosen part-time role can enhance your education instead of diverting from it. For example, my marketing assignments became more significant when applied to real-world scenarios.
Exploring different part-time jobs
Throughout my Master’s program, I tried out various positions, such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each provided unique insights. Hospitality experiences taught me true customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under stress. These skills have remained beneficial beyond the café environment.

Part-time jobs were vital for my finances. I was able to cover rent, travel, and living costs, even managing to save a little. As an international student, I could work up to 20 hours weekly during term time and full-time during breaks, effectively balancing income with downtime.
