Upon arriving in London as an international student, you soon realize how costs such as rent, food, transportation, and tuition begin to add up. Another observation is the unique professional culture, where work, communication, and creativity are viewed differently compared to your home country.
Part-time positions connected these two worlds for me, assisting in financial management while providing insights into the UK market, particularly from a marketing and customer experience standpoint. My initial and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s primary marketing team. Being compensated to generate content for a top university was dreamlike and had a positive impact on my year.
Becoming a MORA Content Creator
Collaborating with the MORA team to produce content for over 700,000 viewers across Imperial’s social media platforms was a fantasy come true. It entailed storytelling and sharing the student journey, understanding institutional communication, and learning the tone and authenticity that resonates with a variety of audiences.
This position provided unanticipated chances, such as interviewing notable individuals like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. These experiences would not have come to fruition without embracing that initial opportunity. The MORA team is encouraging, supportive, and offers creative freedom for experimentation. If you’re passionate about storytelling and content initiatives, this role is one of the finest part-time opportunities at Imperial.

Balancing work and study
Managing work and classes necessitates organization. I planned my shifts for times when my coursework was lighter. Your degree should take precedence, yet an appropriate part-time job can enhance your studies. My marketing coursework held more significance when applied to real-world jobs.
Exploring different part-time jobs
Throughout my Master’s program, I explored various jobs like waiter, event planner, barista, and bartender. Each role imparted distinct lessons. Hospitality positions provided genuine customer service experience, patience, teamwork, and composure under pressure. These competencies have remained with me well beyond the café setting.
Financial independence and visa rules
From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were vital, covering rent, travel, and living costs, with some savings as well. International students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays, allowing for an appropriate balance of income and relaxation. It’s essential to comply with visa regulations, as exceeding work hours can impact visa status. Imperial offers clear guidelines, so ensure to confirm conditions before accepting positions.
Final thoughts
Looking back on my part-time experiences at Imperial, it was more than just earning an income. It bolstered my confidence, taught professionalism in a new environment, and connected me with a diverse array of individuals. Every role, from making coffee to executing digital campaigns, has provided invaluable lessons for the future.
