When you begin your journey in London as an international student, the first thing you notice is how swiftly costs can pile up, from rent and groceries to travel and tuition fees. For me, part-time employment linked these two realms, enabling me to manage my finances and grasp the UK market, particularly in marketing and customer experience. My initial and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing team. Getting paid to produce content for a prestigious university felt surreal and had a positive impact on my year.
**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**
Assisting the team and generating content for more than 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media was a dream come true. It involved narrating stories and sharing the student experience, honing skills in institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonates with varied audiences.
In this position, I encountered unexpected opportunities, such as interviewing notable figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. This wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t seized that first opportunity. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and encourages creative exploration. If you enjoy storytelling and wish to participate in engaging content projects, this is one of the top part-time positions at Imperial.
**Finding part-time opportunities**
There are several avenues to discover part-time work while studying at Imperial. I secured mine through Imperial’s internal job postings on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. The crucial aspect is to customize your CV for the specific role and convey enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can provide support with CVs, mock interviews, and job hunting. Keep in mind that employers look for reliability, initiative, and friendliness, in addition to experience.
**Balancing work and study**
Managing work alongside classes necessitates organization. I accepted shifts only when my class schedule permitted. Your degree should take precedence, but a well-selected part-time job can enhance your academic journey. My marketing coursework felt more relevant when I applied those concepts in practical job scenarios.
**Exploring different part-time jobs**
Throughout my Master’s, I experimented with various roles like server, event coordinator, coffee maker, and bartender. Each job imparted something distinct. Hospitality work taught me the essence of real customer service, the importance of patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under pressure.
