For me, part-time employment served as a connector between these two realms. It enabled me to manage my finances effectively while gaining insights into the UK market, particularly in terms of marketing and customer experience. My initial and favored position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. The experience of getting paid to develop content for a prestigious university was surreal and positively influenced my year.
Taking on the role of a MORA Content Creator meant assisting the team and generating content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms. It was centered on storytelling and reflecting the student experience, learning institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonate with a wide range of audiences.
This position provided opportunities I had never envisioned, such as interviewing notable figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. None of these experiences would have materialized if I hadn’t embraced that first opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, encouraging, and fosters creative exploration. Balancing employment and academic responsibilities calls for careful planning. I arranged my shifts during lighter weeks in my class schedule. Your degree should remain the focus, yet a strategically chosen part-time job can enhance your academic experience. My marketing coursework felt significantly more relevant as I observed its application in real-world scenarios.
During my Master’s program, I explored various positions such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each job imparted unique lessons. Work in hospitality provided me with valuable customer service skills, patience, teamwork, and the ability to remain composed under stress. These competencies have continued to benefit me beyond my time at the café.
From a financial standpoint, part-time jobs were essential. They helped in covering my rent, transportation, and living costs, while also allowing for some savings. As an international student, I was permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during vacation periods, balancing earnings with the need for rest.
