Upon relocating to London as an international student, you soon realize how quickly costs can add up, from housing and food to transportation and tuition fees. Another observation is the unique professional environment, where work, communication, and creativity are viewed differently compared to your home country.
For me, part-time jobs connected these two spheres, aiding my financial management while gaining insight into the UK market, especially in marketing and customer experience. My initial and favorite position was as a MORA Content Creator with Imperial’s central marketing team. Being compensated to generate content for a top university was surreal and significantly enriched my year.
**Becoming a MORA Content Creator**
Collaborating with the MORA team was a dream, supporting them and producing content seen by over 700,000 people across Imperial’s social media platforms. It involved crafting narratives and sharing the student experience, mastering institutional communication, and grasping the tone and authenticity that resonate with varied audiences.
This role provided unforeseen opportunities, like interviewing prominent individuals such as Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. Such experiences would not have occurred had I not seized that initial opportunity. The MORA team is welcoming, supportive, and offers a creative space to innovate. If you have a passion for storytelling and wish to partake in captivating content projects, this is one of the premier part-time positions at Imperial.
**Finding part-time opportunities**
There are numerous avenues to locate part-time employment while studying at Imperial. I discovered mine through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. Customize your CV to the specific role you’re aiming for and express enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can provide guidance on CVs, mock interviews, and job searches. Most part-time employers prioritize reliability, initiative, and sociability, not solely experience.
**Balancing work and study**
Effectively managing work and classes necessitates organization. I accepted shifts only when my class schedule was lighter. Keep in mind, your degree should be the main focus, but a well-suited part-time job can enhance your academic pursuits. My marketing studies felt more relevant as I observed those concepts applied in real-world positions.
**Exploring different part-time jobs**
Throughout my Master’s, I explored various roles such as waiter, event manager, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted unique lessons. My experience in hospitality taught me genuine customer service, patience, teamwork, and maintaining composure under pressure. These insights and skills have remained with me long after leaving the café.
**Financial independence and visa rules**
In financial terms, part-time jobs were essential. I managed to cover my rent, travel, and living costs and even saved a little. As an international student, I could work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during vacations, achieving a balance between earning and resting.
