Upon your arrival in London as an international student, the first realization is that costs can escalate rapidly, from housing and food to transportation and tuition fees. The subsequent realization is the unique professional environment, where workplace norms, communication styles, and creative approaches differ from those in your home country.
For me, part-time employment acted as a bridge between these two realms, assisting me in financial management while gaining insights into the UK market, particularly in marketing and customer experience. My inaugural and cherished position was as a MORA Content Creator within Imperial’s central marketing team. Being compensated to produce content for a prestigious university was an incredible experience that positively influenced my year.
**Embarking as a MORA Content Creator**
Contributing to the team and producing content for over 700,000 individuals across Imperial’s social media platforms was truly a dream come true. It involved crafting narratives and sharing the student journey, grasping institutional communication, and learning the tone and authenticity that resonate with varied audiences.
This position presented unforeseen opportunities, such as interviewing prominent figures like Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty. Such experiences would not have come to fruition without my willingness to embrace the first opportunity. The MORA team is supportive, encouraging, and offers a creative environment to play around with ideas. If you are passionate about storytelling and wish to engage in captivating content projects, this role stands out as one of the finest part-time positions at Imperial.
**Locating part-time roles**
Numerous avenues exist for discovering part-time employment while pursuing studies at Imperial. I secured mine through Imperial’s internal job boards on JobsLive, LinkedIn, and career fairs during Welcome Week. The essential factor is customizing your CV to suit the position and demonstrating genuine enthusiasm. Imperial’s Careers Service can assist with CV preparation, mock interviews, and job hunting. Keep in mind, employers value reliability, initiative, and friendliness, not solely past experience.
**Managing work and academics**
Juggling work and studies necessitates some planning. I only accepted shifts when my academic schedule permitted. Your studies take precedence, but a strategically chosen part-time job can enhance your learning experience. My marketing classes felt significantly more relevant when connected to practical jobs.
**Trying out different part-time positions**
During my Master’s program, I engaged in various jobs such as waiter, event coordinator, barista, and bartender. Each position imparted unique lessons. Work in hospitality fostered skills in customer service, patience, teamwork, and composure under stress. These competencies have remained with me beyond the cafe setting.
