If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need to stress. Here’s a guide to help you acclimate to London before commencing at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban lifestyle.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Find Accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotels by securing housing in advance. I got lucky, but not everyone does. Seek out a location close to campus or along a reliable Tube line to minimize long travels for early morning lectures.
Administrative Essentials
Take care of these necessities shortly after arriving:
- Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut offer favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – crucial for navigation. Obtain one with data as soon as you arrive.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and favorable for students. Establish one for everyday transactions and part-time work payments.
- Student ID card – vital for campus entry, library access, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.
The Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week is significant. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-organized clubs and societies. Even if you’re a bit reserved, try to engage. I forged lasting friendships during random tours and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Getting Around London: Travel Wisely
During my first week, I trudged nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. Avoid making the same blunder. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking is still a wonderful way to uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Safe Havens
London can be a lot to handle. Discover a cozy spot, such as a park, café, bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can unwind and recharge. My go-to spots include a nearby park and the O2, where I relax weekly.
Get Out There!
Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods around campus and your residence. Identify local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Tour prominent landmarks, free museums, and hop on a double-decker bus for the scenery. Some of your most memorable experiences will stem from getting a bit lost.
