- Money Transfers – As an overseas student, seek an economical method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM Card – Navigating a new city without data can be challenging. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan without delay.
- Setting Up a Bank Account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday expenses and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID Card – This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as possible.
The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the opportunity to meet roommates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that excite you.
Even if you are somewhat reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I met some of my dearest friends during campus tours and club events. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Travel Wisely in London
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable, but chaotic. Don’t mirror my mistake. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.
Nevertheless, strolling remains the best way to absorb the city’s essence and culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel daunting, especially at first. Finding a favorite spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park. I go there daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly.
Uncover your personal retreats, like a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and refresh.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the areas around your campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and cherished dining or coffee venues.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and wander without an itinerary. Some of your most memorable experiences will arise from the occasional detour!
