Upon my initial arrival in London, the city felt vast and intimidating, with a cacophony of sounds and rapid pace overwhelming me. Equipped only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain of where to start. If you are about to embark on this journey, have no fear. Here’s my guidance for easing into London before classes commence at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban lifestyle.
Regardless of whether you arrive several weeks early or just before the semester, these are the insights I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Primary task: secure housing
Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime spots are snatched up quickly. Look for a place close to your campus or on a reliable Tube line—early morning classes are quite challenging if your commute exceeds an hour.
Administrative essentials: handling life basics
Once you’re in London, promptly take care of these essential matters:
- Currency transfers – International students require a dependable, cost-effective method to receive funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Navigation becomes complicated without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and a data plan shortly after your arrival.
- Bank account establishment – Some banks demand a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly setups. Open an account for your daily transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – This is essential for entry to campus buildings, libraries, and to avail student discounts. Make sure to collect your ID card without delay.
Your inaugural week at Imperial is crucial
The first week at Imperial is vital. You’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and sign up for activities that pique your interest.
Even if shyness holds you back, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and events held by societies. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Getting around London: be smart about travel
During my first week, I was bewildered by the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable—don’t replicate my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel via the Tube and buses economically.
Nonetheless, walking is an excellent way to absorb the city’s essence and culture. You can uncover hidden treasures simply by exploring.
Discover your soothing spots
London can feel emotionally intense, especially at the outset. A favorite spot helps—mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I relax while watching a movie weekly.
Identify your own comforting places, whether it be a cafe, bookstore, or a quiet bench by the river. Having a location to recharge and relax is priceless.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the regularly frequented areas around your campus and home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred places for food or coffee.
Visit iconic attractions, wander through museums, and take a trip on a red double-decker bus. Stroll without a plan—some of your fondest memories may arise from a little unplanned adventure!
Last pieces of advice before diving into Imperial student life
- Carry a reusable bag—stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket—umbrellas are ineffective in strong winds.
- Participate in unique events—they make for great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented—everyone experiences it initially.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out from the get-go. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco outing at a time.
