If this is your upcoming situation, don’t fret. Here’s how to adapt to life in London before commencing your journey at Imperial, allowing you to appreciate your new surroundings.
Whether you show up weeks in advance or just before classes begin, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Steer clear of expensive hotels by arranging your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The prime options vanish fast! Target a location close to campus or along a reliable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early morning lectures.

Once in London, tackle these critical tasks without delay:
- Money Transfers – International students need cost-effective methods to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM Card – Obtain one swiftly to ensure you have data for navigation in this unfamiliar city.
- Bank Account – Certain banks request a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday spending and payments from your part-time job.
- Student ID Card – Crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and securing student discounts. Acquire it at your earliest convenience.
Your Initial Week at Imperial is Key
Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your university journey.
Smart Travel in London
<pDuring my first week, I struggled with public transportation and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable, albeit hectic, experience. Get a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.
Identify Your Relaxation Spots
London can feel emotionally intense. Having a comforting space is beneficial. Mine is a local park where I unwind daily. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another place I relax weekly with a film. Discover your own places, like a café or bookstore, where you can recharge and regroup.
Discover the City
Become familiar with the areas you frequent near campus and your home. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a double-decker bus for a scenic view. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering without a plan.
