Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, noisy, and dynamic. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you are about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London before your journey begins at Imperial, allowing you to appreciate the city.
Whether you’re reaching the city early or just before classes commence, here’s the guidance I wish I had upon my arrival.
First things first: secure your accommodation
Evade pricey hotel bookings by securing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The best choices are snatched up quickly, so look for a place close to campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.
Administrative tasks: organizing necessary arrangements
As soon as you get to London, focus on these tasks:
- Funds transfer – as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to make sure you have data for navigation in a new locality.
- Bank account – certain banks require a UK address, though digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday expenses and part-time job remuneration.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is key
Your first week at Imperial is essential. It’s the time you’ll meet roommates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-driven clubs and societies. Even if you feel timid, urge yourself to get involved. I made lasting friendships during campus tours and society tables. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Navigating London: travel wisely
<pThroughout my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable but disorderly experience. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cost-effective travel. Walking remains an excellent method to discover and unearth hidden treasures in the city.
Discover your soothing spots
Living in London can feel emotionally intense. Having a comfort location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I like to unwind. The O2, just ten minutes away, is another beloved spot to relax with a film. Identify your own spots, whether a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to refresh and rejuvenate.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the frequently visited areas surrounding campus and home. Pinpoint your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations. Check out iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus for the sights. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a bit lost!
Last pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Obtain a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective in breezy weather.
- Accept invitations to out-of-the-ordinary events – they create fantastic memories.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal initially.
There’s no need to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
