Upon arriving in London for the very first time, the city’s enormity felt both vast and daunting. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you are about to encounter this, there’s no need to fret. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.
Whether you show up weeks in advance or just prior to the term starting, here’s the perspective I wish I had received.
First and foremost: secure your accommodation
Steer clear of expensive hotels by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. Seek a residence close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to circumvent lengthy commutes for those early lectures.
Administrative essentials: taking care of the basics
Upon your arrival, tackle these necessary tasks:
- Funds transfer – as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method for transferring funds. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to have data access and navigation in your new setting.
- Bank account – consider digital banks like Monzo or Starling which are speedy and student-friendly, vital for transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – essential for campus entry, library access, and student discounts. Acquire it at your earliest convenience.
Your inaugural week at Imperial is crucial
Your first week is key for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re somewhat reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and at society stalls, which set a lively tone for my university life.
Navigating London: smart travel tips
At first, I struggled with the Tube and bus systems, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience, albeit chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains a fabulous way to uncover charming spots within the city.
Discover your favorite spots
London’s intensity can be a lot, so identify a place where you feel at ease. For me, it’s a local park where I can unwind. The O2 is another venue I frequent weekly to de-stress. Locate your own cozy places, be it a cafe or a bookstore, to recharge and refresh.
Make sure to venture out!
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Visit renowned landmarks, free museums, and soak in the city’s attractions. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering about without any specific plan.
Last pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Utilize a reusable bag to evade charges associated with single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas aren’t very useful on windy days.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.
