If you are about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before your time at Imperial begins, ensuring you can relish the city.
Whether you’re getting here weeks ahead or just days before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Steer clear of costly hotels by arranging your housing in advance. I was fortunate, but options vanish rapidly! Try to find a place near campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy travel times.
Crucial Life Administration
Once you arrive in London, promptly tackle these essentials:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one straight away for data and navigation.
- Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus, utilizing library services, and obtaining discounts.
Key First Week at Imperial
Your initial week is essential for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in; that’s how I formed lasting friendships.
Smart Travel in London
At first, I struggled with public transit and ended up walking nine kilometers. Don’t make my error; obtain a Student Oyster card for discounted fares. Nevertheless, walking remains a fantastic way to uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Comfort Zones
London might feel overwhelming, so establish a comfort zone. Mine is a local park where I can relax daily, and the O2 for weekly movie outings. Explore your own spaces to destress.
Discover the City
Get to know nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Check out attractions, museums, and revel in spontaneous city strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering off track.
