When I arrived in London for the very first time, the city struck me as vast, loud, fast-moving, and somewhat intimidating. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a sense of uncertainty about where to start. If you find yourself about to embark on this journey, there’s no need for concern. Here’s how to set up your new life in London before commencing your studies at Imperial, ensuring you can fully enjoy the city.
Regardless of whether you’re getting here early or right before the term begins, here is the guidance I wish I had upon my arrival.
Locate Accommodation
Prevent costly hotel expenses by securing housing in advance. I was lucky, but many aren’t, as the top choices vanish quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy travels to your early classes.
Crucial Life Administration
Upon your arrival, take care of these vital tasks:
- Money transfers: As an international student, look for a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from home. Services such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card: Acquire one right away for data access and navigation in your new surroundings.
- Bank account: Some banks might ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and student-oriented. Open an account to manage day-to-day expenses and part-time job income.
- Student ID card: This allows you entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at the earliest opportunity.
Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week plays a vital role in shaping your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to get involved; I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your initial week sets the stage for your university adventure.
Navigate London Wisely
In my initial week, I traversed nine kilometers through London to explore, which was unforgettable but hectic. Avoid my blunder. Obtain a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.
Discover Your Comfort Zones
London can be quite daunting, particularly at first. Identify a comforting place, such as a park, cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for weekly movie screenings.
Discover the City
Get acquainted with commonly visited locations around your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee venues. Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and roam around aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will originate from getting a bit lost.

- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas often fail against strong winds.
