Touching down in London for the first time was astonishing. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost as to where to start. If you are about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling down before your journey at Imperial begins, so you can relish your new life in the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, this advice would have been invaluable to me when I first came here.

First things first: secure your living arrangements

To avoid expensive hotel lodgings, arrange your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone can be, as the prime options vanish swiftly. Strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent long travels for early classes.

Life administration: sorting out the necessary basics

Once in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, look for a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – connectivity is vital for getting around in a new location. Acquire a UK SIM card and data package soon after your arrival.
  • Bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly to students. Establish an account for daily use and part-time income.
  • Student ID card – necessary for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as early as possible.

The introductory week at Imperial is the most pivotal

Your first week at Imperial is key to your student experience. It’s when you connect with flatmates, peers, and future companions. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and immerse yourself in what interests you.

Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and found close friends through campus tours and society booths. Your initial week establishes the atmosphere for your university journey.

Exploring London: travel wisely

During my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable but chaotic experience. Don’t follow my example. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Nonetheless, walking remains the finest way to appreciate the city’s culture. London’s hidden treasures are frequently uncovered by wandering.

Discover your comfort zones

London can feel emotionally taxing at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I retreat regularly to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, is another place I relax weekly with a film.

Identify your own comfort locations, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These places can be more beneficial than one might assume.

And make sure to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequently visit around the campus and your residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus for the views. Meander without a plan – some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting a bit lost!

Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up against the wind.
  • Attend quirky events – they lead to fantastic stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel lost – it’s common at the start.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
