Arriving in London for the very first time, I found the city to be incredibly daunting with its vastness, noise, and speed. Equipped only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you are about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to relish the city.

Whether you are getting in weeks ahead or just on the cusp of the term, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon setting foot here.

First things first: secure accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by securing your lodging early. I was fortunate, but not all are, as the best options vanish swiftly. Strive to reside close to your campus or along a reliable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.

Life admin: arranging essential tasks

Upon arriving in London, focus on these important tasks:

  • Handle money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy, cost-effective way to send money from home. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • Acquire a UK SIM card – you’ll need data for navigation, particularly in an unfamiliar area. Obtain a UK SIM card and data soon after arrival.
  • Establish a bank account – some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.
  • Retrieve your student ID card – this allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it without delay.

Your initial week at Imperial is vital

Your first week at Imperial is essential. It’s when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led groups and societies and join those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Exploring London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I was confused by the Tube and buses, which led to me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience – don’t repeat my error. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.

Nevertheless, walking remains the best way to soak up the city and its culture. You’ll stumble upon hidden treasures by meandering about.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense, especially at the start. Having a comforting spot is beneficial – for me, it’s the park near my home. I go there daily to unwind. My second comfort zone is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I watch movies weekly to relax.

Locate your own peaceful places, be it a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to recharge and reset. It’s more beneficial than you’d expect.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequent around campus and at home. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, along with your favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander without a set plan. Some of your greatest memories will stem from getting slightly lost!

Final notes before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

  • Get a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well in windy weather.
  • Attend unique events – they provide great tales.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common for everyone initially.

You don’t need to have every detail figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial – so take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
