Arriving in London was quite a lot to handle; the city felt vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London and make the most of your time before beginning at Imperial.

Whether you’re getting in early or just prior to term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation First

Steer clear of pricey hotels by organizing accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but good options tend to vanish swiftly. Strive to reside near your campus or a dependable Tube line to bypass lengthy commutes.

Important Life Admin

When you arrive, address these vital tasks:

  • Money transfers: Utilize apps such as Wise or Revolut for cost-effective international transfers.
  • UK SIM card: Obtain one right away for data and navigation.
  • Bank account: Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students.
  • Student ID card: Crucial for campus entry, library access, and discounts.

Maximize Your First Week

Your initial week at Imperial is essential. Meet new individuals and discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, engage; I formed close friendships during campus tours and society activities.

Travel Wisely in London

Avoid my error of trekking nine kilometres through London. Acquire a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for reduced travel expenses. However, walking is excellent for uncovering hidden treasures.

Identify Comfort Zones

London can feel daunting, so identify a comfort zone. Mine is a nearby park and the O2 for films. Find your own spaces to unwind, like a cafe or bookstore.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with surrounding areas of campus and home. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, and preferred dining locations. Explore landmarks, free museums, and embark on spontaneous strolls. Some of your finest memories will stem from exploration.

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag to circumvent charges.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket for rainy winds.
  • Participate in unique events for unforgettable tales.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal.

You don’t need to have it all figured out on the first day. You’re already ahead by reading this. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure.
