Arriving in London for the first time was quite daunting. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and energetic. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no reason to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor the city.

Whether you come weeks ahead or just before the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had at my arrival.

First priority: secure your housing

Prevent costly hotel expenses by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best choices get booked quickly. Try to locate yourself near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: addressing the vital necessities

Here are some key essentials to tackle shortly after landing in London:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a reliable and cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one quickly to ensure you have data for navigation in an unfamiliar city or country.
  • Bank account – some banks may ask for a UK address; however, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and cater well to students. Establish an account for daily transactions and part-time job deposits.
  • Student ID card – this allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Be sure to obtain it as soon as possible.

The initial week at Imperial is the key

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and organizations and participate in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re an introvert, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society showcases. Your first week will set the stage for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience but somewhat chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to make Tube and bus travel more economical.

Walking remains a fantastic way to engage with the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your favorite spots

London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. Having a cherished place helps—mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I regularly go to watch movies and de-stress.

Seek out your own comforting locations, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These spots can offer the relaxation you need.

And make sure to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequently visit near campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Check out iconic landmarks, delve into free museums, and relish a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from unplanned outings.

Final pointers before you immerse in Imperial student life

  • Utilize a reusable bag – retailers often charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle against strong winds.
  • Participate in unique events – they create memorable stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a typical feeling at the outset.

You don’t need to have everything planned out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was upon starting at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
