Stepping into London for the very first time was a bit daunting, given its vastness and rapid pace. I found myself at a crossroads, equipped only with a suitcase and Google Maps. If this is you soon, don’t fret. Here’s how to streamline your life in London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks prior or just on the cusp of term, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given.
Secure accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotels by booking your lodging in advance. I was lucky, though not everyone may be. Opt for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Administrative tasks: essentials to tackle
Once you land in London, focus on these tasks:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, discover a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one straight away for data purposes, as it’s vital for navigation.
- Bank account – consider digital banks such as Monzo or Starling for quick and student-friendly solutions. Establish an account for your everyday transactions and part-time employment payments.
- Student ID card – this is vital for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it at the earliest opportunity.
Significance of the initial week at Imperial
Your first week is vital for meeting flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week events, discover over 350 clubs and societies, and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to join in. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
At first, I struggled with the Tube and bus systems and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and registering for the 18+ discount for more economical travel.
Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover the city and stumble upon hidden treasures.
Identify your go-to places
London can be a lot to handle, so find a comforting spot. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for films. Unearth your own favorite locations, whether it’s a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can unwind and recharge.
Discover the city
Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and top dining spots.
Check out iconic landmarks, tour free museums, hop on a double-decker bus, and meander without a specific destination. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting slightly lost.
Helpful hints before commencing life at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket, since umbrellas aren’t effective against the wind.
- Join in on unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel a bit disoriented; it’s common initially.
