Upon my first arrival in London, the city struck me as vast, noisy, brisk, and somewhat daunting. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to embark on this adventure, don’t be concerned. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to make the most of the city.
Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just moments before the term begins, here’s the advice I wish had been shared with me as I arrived.
First and foremost: secure accommodation
Steer clear of expensive hotel bookings by organizing your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone finds it easy, as the prime choices fill up fast. Aim to find a residence near your campus or on a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes to early lectures can be challenging.
Administrative tasks: taking care of the vital necessities
Once in London, swiftly tackle these essential tasks:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and affordable method for moving funds from home. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one as soon as possible to avoid being without data for navigating a new place.
- Bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Set up an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it at the earliest opportunity.
The initial week at Imperial is pivotal
Your first week at Imperial is essential for shaping your student experience. This is your chance to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to dive into over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that spark your interest.
Even if you are timid, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I forged close friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your first week sets the foundation for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my initial week, I had little understanding of the Tube or bus systems, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was a remarkable yet chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel via Tube and buses more affordably.
Walking remains an excellent method to soak in the city’s ambiance and culture, uncovering hidden treasures.
Discover your favorite spots
Initially, London can feel emotionally intense. Having a go-to place can be comforting – mine is a local park I frequent daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy weekly movie screenings.
Seek out your own comforting locations, such as a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to recharge and relax.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequent near campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred eateries or coffee shops.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for stunning views, and wander without a set plan. Some of your greatest memories will emerge from just getting a bit lost.
Final pieces of advice before immersing yourself in Imperial student life
- Bring a reusable bag – stores usually charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fail against the wind.
- Participate in unusual events – they lead to memorable stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel a bit lost – that’s completely normal at the start.
You don’t have to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
